A cancer diagnosis can make the world stop for a moment.

One minute, life is normal.

The next, you're hearing words like tumour, biopsy, chemotherapy, surgery, lymphoma or prognosis — and trying to understand what they mean for the fluffy sitting beside you.

For many families, the first thought is simply:

What can I do to help them?

At KIBO Holistic Vet Team, this is where we believe holistic veterinary care can have an important supportive role.

We don't look at cancer as something that should be approached from only one direction, and we don't ask families to choose between conventional veterinary medicine and holistic care.

Instead, we ask a different question:

What does this individual fluffy need to help support their wellbeing and quality of life through the journey ahead?

It's not only about the cancer

When a fluffy is diagnosed with cancer, understandably, everyone's attention goes to the cancer itself.

But your fluffy is still a whole animal.

They still need to eat.

They need to sleep comfortably.

They need to move around.

They need enough energy to do the things they enjoy.

They may be dealing with nausea, changes in appetite, discomfort, digestive changes or tiredness.

And emotionally, we want them to still have those little moments that make them them.

The tail wag when you walk through the door.

The interest in dinner.

Wanting to go outside.

Following you into the kitchen.

Enjoying their favourite spot in the sunshine.

These things matter.

That's why quality of life sits at the heart of our approach to cancer support.

Working alongside your existing veterinary care

Holistic cancer support at KIBO is not intended to replace appropriate diagnosis, oncology, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or other conventional veterinary treatment.

It can be used alongside the care your fluffy is already receiving, with each animal assessed individually.

Depending on your fluffy's circumstances, their KIBO support plan may include:

Acupuncture
Used as part of an individualised supportive plan, with a focus on overall wellbeing and comfort.

Chinese herbal medicine
Dr KK may formulate herbs specifically for the individual animal based on their TCVM assessment, current health, medications and stage of their journey.

Food therapy and nutritional support
Cancer and its treatment can sometimes affect appetite, weight and digestion. We look carefully at what your fluffy is eating and how they are coping, rather than simply handing every cancer patient the same diet.

Tui-Na
Gentle hands-on techniques may be incorporated where appropriate to support comfort and wellbeing.

Dolphin MPS therapy
This may be considered as part of the broader supportive plan where appropriate for the individual patient.

Not every fluffy needs every therapy.

There is no standard KIBO "cancer protocol".

The plan belongs to the animal in front of us.

Sometimes the little things are the big things

Over the years, we've supported many families through cancer.

And something we've learned is that progress isn't always measured by a laboratory number or a scan.

Families often tell us about the little things.

"She's interested in her food again."

"He wanted to come for his walk."

"She seems brighter."

"He's following me around the house again."

"We had a really good week."

When you're caring for an animal with cancer, those words can mean an enormous amount.

Frankie's story

Frankie's family came to Dr KK during one of the most frightening periods of their lives.

Their beautiful five-year-old Border Collie had been diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma.

Alongside Frankie's conventional cancer treatment, her family wanted to explore how they could support her more broadly.

Her KIBO care incorporated nutrition, individually selected TCVM herbs and acupuncture.

But what stays with us isn't simply the treatments Frankie received.

It's what her family said afterwards.

Food becomes especially important

One of the first questions we often hear is:

"What should I feed them?"

There is an enormous amount of information online about so-called "cancer diets", and it can quickly become overwhelming.

Our approach is not to follow internet trends or put every animal on the same diet.

A fluffy undergoing chemotherapy may have very different needs from one recovering from surgery. Another may be losing weight, struggling with nausea or simply becoming extremely fussy.

The priority is that your fluffy receives appropriate, balanced nutrition and enough energy to maintain their body as well as possible.

Any changes should take into account their cancer, conventional treatment, medications and other medical conditions.

Food should support the patient — not become another source of stress for the family.

Watch the fluffy, not just the diagnosis

You know your animal better than anyone.

During a cancer journey, pay attention to changes such as:

• Appetite and interest in food

• Weight or muscle loss

• Drinking

• Vomiting or diarrhoea

• Energy levels

• Mobility

• Breathing

• Sleeping and ability to settle comfortably

• Pain or sensitivity

• Interest in walks, toys and normal activities

• Interaction with the family

• Whether they still seem like themselves

Some changes may need prompt attention from your primary veterinarian or oncologist, particularly significant pain, breathing difficulties, repeated vomiting or diarrhoea, bleeding, collapse, inability to eat or drink, or a sudden deterioration.

Don't wait for the next holistic appointment if something concerns you.

Cancer care works best when everyone caring for your fluffy communicates.

And we need to talk about the humans too

Cancer doesn't just happen to the animal.

It happens to the whole family.

There can be fear, uncertainty, difficult decisions and the constant temptation to analyse every meal, every sleep and every little change.

We understand that.

Sometimes you need someone to explain things again.

Sometimes you need to ask whether something you've noticed matters.

And sometimes you simply need somebody who understands why one good day with your fluffy can mean absolutely everything.

We want our families to feel supported too.

What does "hope" mean when your fluffy has cancer?

Our name, KIBO, means hope in Japanese.

But hope doesn't mean making promises.

And it doesn't always mean hoping for a cure.

Sometimes hope means another comfortable day.

Another walk.

Another dinner enthusiastically eaten.

Another cuddle on the sofa.

Another trip to the beach.

Another morning when you look at your fluffy and think:

There you are.

That's the kind of hope we believe in.

Realistic. Individual. Compassionate.

And always centred around the animal.
